We were recently invited to respond to the latest DIA exhibition at Design Made Trade this year for the State of Design Festival. The theme of the exhibition was Motion & Emotion and asked a selection of DIA designers to respond. Ross Gardam looked back to childhood to for inspiration creating a timber Seesaw constructed from a single sheet of Plywood.

The exhibition is now on at the Design Gallery located at level1, 175 Collins St Melbourne until August the 19th.

Green Spaces

Single or multiple business foster the Green Space for the community and in return receive an increase in retail space. Lost & Found

Lost & Found is a collaborative exhibition between Ross Gardam and David Sevior. The title and pieces within the show represent the use - and ‘re-purposing’ - of existing and discarded materials and objects that would otherwise become landfill. On display will be a diverse range of furniture pieces, lighting products and an intriguing inflatable structure that create playful interior spaces.

The Project

As part of this years The Project InterfaceFLOR collaborated with 10 designers across a range of disciplines - interiors, industrial, graphic, visual and fashion. InterfaceFLOR deconstructed there product to its raw materials - yarn, carpet topcloth and tile. Each designer was given a mannequin and asked to reconstruct it into an art installation in response to one simple brief - inspire emotion. Spaceleft's response explored how personality is perceived and utilised carpet tile cut by hand to create a shadow alter-ego.

Fringe Alumni Exhibition

Squash Me will be at the Melbourne Museum as part of a curated collection that documents the raw and always free spirit of Fringe Furniture. Throughout its long history Fringe Furniture has consistently presented works that challenge, provoke and question. Annually, the exhibition acts as a yearly catalyst for experimentation providing a place to present new prototypes or explore ideas that are free from the restrictions of the commercial environment. This retrospective exhibition will consolidate the history of this iconic Melbourne exhibition by bringing together the works of the alumni of Fringe Furniture. The exhibition runs from the 24th of September to the 11th of october.

Flint

The Flint table and bench family comes in an indoor and an outdoor range. The outdoor table and bench set is available in Australian spotted gum while the indoor set is available in a variety of finishes including E0 vertically laminated birch. The leg detail was inspired from the principles of a lever and explores the idea of supporting the table using its own stabilising weight. It can also be easily removed and flat-packed for transportation. The leg detail is available in a selection of colours allowing the table and bench to inhabit a number of interiors and environments. Introducing the Perch Stool

Perch is designed for commercial and residential use. It can be used as a stool or table, is stackable and available in a range of colours. Perch is constructed from E0 sustainably sourced ply pressed with a polypropylene skin. The manufacturing process maximizes material use with 4 stools cut from a single sheet of ply.

Packaged Glow

Packaged Glow has been selected in the Launch Pad 09 exhibition that is taking place in Sydney on the 30th of july to the 13th of August, for more information see - http://www.launch-pad.com.au/finalists/2009

Packaged Glow will also be featured as the Fringe Furniture Alumni Exhibition at Design Made Trade as part the State of design festival in mid July.

The Packaged Glow light was inspired by the packaging of products. Using high-density packaging foam, a lamp form is cutout and supplies the negative structure to house a light source. The cutout internal becomes an accompanying sculptural form. The power cord presses into a recess where the foam tension keeps it in place, creating a white highlight of the light form. The main lamp is a 2.3W LED globe, which generates the same light as a 20W incandescent bulb. The lamp gives an incredible 30,000 hours of life and if used for 3 hours a day would last approximately 25 years.

Laced Books

Objects of beauty with a sense of history, the millions of old books in circulation unfortunately have little or no application today. Whilst they are of a higher quality than today's mass produced books, their content is often of little relevance, and they are generally found collecting dust in second hand stores or destined for landfill. Laced Books became an exploration of how to reinterpret these objects, giving them a second life. With the original content removed the books have become beautiful enclosures for a variety of modern day objects.

From 9 to 5 Keith Melbourne & Ross Gardam are independent product designers engaged in commercial projects. Laced books was conceived as a collaborative hands-on project for fun, a creative exploration outside normal commercial limitations.

The Laced Books project produced plenty of laughs and a limited edition run of 50 individually numbered copies have been produced.

Maverick Design Pitch

The concept is based on creating a pop up retail space utilising a shipping container as an existing structure. Spaceleft in combination with decode, http://www.decodemedia.com.au/, have designed an exhibition of designs for an EBD (Ecological Business District) neighbouring the Dockland. The Exhibition put on by Veil (Victorian Eco Innovation Lab) is about re-interperating the area and features designs from over 200 students.

The exhibition is designed utilising timber pallets, echo panel and x-board to create an economical and sustainable space. The pallet structures supply a ideal platform for the multimedia displays and presentations. Paperback is a new green storage solution created in collaboration with Cindy-Lee Davies from Lightly, www.lightly.com.au Paperback will be launched in Tokyo, Japan at 100% Design Tokyo on the 30th of October 2008.

Paperback is a sustainable short term storage solution made from 97% recycled post consumer paper waste. It is lightweight and easy to assemble and at the end of it's initial use the product can be repulped, exercising a closed loop recycling process.

Spaceleft have recently been commissioned by Inventive Labs (www.inventivelabs.com.au) to design and build a new storage solution utilising sustainable materials. 'Boxset' was developed using similar process involved with 'Flat Jack' however form ply was introduced in the outside structure. The result is a modular storage solution for corporate environments. 'Boxset' can stack in a variety of configuration and formats.

A concept has just been completed for the local organic store Replenish. The concept is based around bringing the orchard into the store environment and also displaying the processes of organic farming. The concept uses hoop pine ply and veneer X-board throughout and has been designed to minimise production techniques.

Tyred is a product produced for the before and after project for the state of design festival. Using a old Delma chair donated from the brother hood of St Laurence the aim of the project is to give the chair a second life. Spaceleft's new design utilises old bike inner tubes sourced from local bike stores which currently go to land fill. The project was completed in collaboration with David Sevior.

Squash Me

Squash me is a new style of lounge chair which uses squash balls as suspension in the seat. Squash Me is made from renewably grown Australian hoop pine ply supported via a metal frame. 13 balls in total create a unique sitting experience. Space left is currently working on the Before & After project as part of the State of Design Festival. The project serves to provide new perspectives on discarded objects in regards to social, cultural and environmental issues. Spaceleft will be working on the Delma chair originally designed by Grant Featherson. CUA Blue Sky Concept

Spaceleft were recently commissioned by Davidson Design on a new concept for Credit Union Australia (CUA). Davidson have created a leading concept both aesthetically and functionally. The new concept which also included rebranding by Davidson creates a unique retail vehicle for CUA. Spaceleft's roll in the project was to create the physicallity and detail design to make the concept functional and manufacturable. The new concept is currently being manufactured and will be rolled out nationally in the near future.

NAB Assessment

The aim of the assessment was to recommend key refinements to the branch's physicality and space design to ensure NAB reach their strategic goals. NAB aim to become world leaders in retail banking and are currently innovators in the Australian industry. Spaceleft's key recommendations were based on space planning, customer movement, sustainable design and profitable retail management.

Textable is an innovative table which can be personalised to individual requirement. The edge profile gives the appearance of a solid ply table top section. The text is CNC routed into the edge before assembly, creating a unique subtile effect.

A World Without Parks

Working with Parks Forum, the peak body for the parks industry, a new graphic identification has been designed for their annual conference. The concept is to be used across all forms of media and plays on the concept of a future without parks.

Cube Design

Concept development of a cube for a dance performance was undertaken in collaboration with Carlee Mellows recently. The cube contained the dancers and created a dynamic scope for movement within. Three separate concepts were produced utilising different materials and structures. The presentation movie attached shows the concepts development for the project.

Lacock Gullam specialise in the area of furniture, product, sign systems and public information strategy that they apply to public, transport and urban environments. Working with the team at Lacock Gullam was an enjoyable process as we pushed the boundaries early in the concept development.
